How the Scam Works<\/b><\/h3>\n

This scam unfolds in three carefully staged steps, each designed to build trust and urgency:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Tech Support Impostor<\/b> \u2013 Scammers pose as tech support, reaching out by phone, email, or text. They convince the victim to download remote-access software and open online banking accounts \u201cto verify charges.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Fake Bank Employee<\/b> \u2013 Next, a caller pretending to be from the bank\u2019s fraud department warns that hackers are stealing money. Victims are pressured to transfer funds to a so-called \u201csafe\u201d account.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Government Impersonation<\/b> \u2013 To seal the deal, fraudsters pose as government officials, urging victims to move their savings again under the guise of protection.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Each stage reinforces the illusion that the victim is protecting their money, when in reality, they\u2019re handing it over to criminals.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Why Seniors Are Targeted<\/b><\/h3>\n

    Seniors are often targeted because they\u2019re more likely to have significant savings and may be less familiar with fast-moving digital scams. Scammers now use AI to personalize their approach \u2014 referencing hobbies, purchases, or even medical needs \u2014 to make their messages sound legitimate.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Red Flags to Watch For<\/b><\/h3>\n

    • Unexpected calls, texts, or emails offering \u201ctech support\u201d or \u201cfraud alerts\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Requests to download remote-access apps or software<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Claims that your bank account has been compromised and funds must be \u201cmoved\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Demands for wire transfers, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or cash shipments<\/span><\/li>\n
