Today is National Employee Appreciation Day, a chance to honor and celebrate employees by expressing just how grateful you are to have them on your team. While making it an official \u201choliday\u201d helps us remember to pause and show employees our gratitude for their hard work, recognition can\u2019t be limited to just one day on a calendar. True appreciation for your employees\u2019 contribution to the success of the organization requires a conscious effort to make it a part of the company\u2019s culture \u2013 every day. As an employer, it is crucial to ask yourself, \u201cHow am I purposefully acknowledging my team?\u201d Here\u2019s what works for us.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Be Available<\/h3>\n

Employees feel valued when you make time for them. Whether it\u2019s through one-on-one meetings, daily huddles, or just responding to your team member\u2019s email in a timely manner, the importance of your availability cannot be understated. Sure, it\u2019s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day responsibilities and appear too busy for the people around you, but being present and available shows your team that you value their time, which in turn makes for happier employees. Hold yourself accountable for regular check-ins.<\/p>\n

When employees are in contact with their bosses, they actually enjoy their jobs more. In fact, according to a TinyPulse survey, the #1 reason for employee dissatisfaction with a direct supervisor was a \u201clack of presence,\u201d and \u201climited interactions with team.\u201d So keeping your employees engaged and feeling appreciated starts with showing up and being available.<\/p>\n

One of the ways this principle is applied at Zander is by having bi-monthly \u201cQ&A with Shervin\u201d sessions with each department, allowing team members the opportunity to ask any questions they have about the business. Members of the executive management team also have an open-door policy to encourage employees to come in and make suggestions, address concerns, or simply enjoy an espresso with the company president.<\/p>\n

Thank Them<\/h3>\n

Saying \u201cthank you\u201d to your employees is a given; showing them you are thankful is what lets them know you mean it.<\/p>\n

Expressing gratitude does not have to be something extravagant or costly. Consider having lunch brought into the office, or providing a monthly delivery of fresh fruit as an ongoing show of gratitude. If food isn\u2019t a motivator for your team, remember that thoughtfulness is what matters. A simple thank you note or email can also go a long way.<\/p>\n

Another great way to foster appreciation is to develop a program that allows employees to thank each other. In our office we have the \u201cPrize Patrol,\u201d where colleagues can recognize and reward their coworkers for nearly any reason \u2013 whether it\u2019s for helping them with a challenging case or holding the door for them. Recipients of the prize patrol receive a notecard with the statement of gratitude from the coworker and a gift card to a coffee shop or retail store.<\/p>\n

Create a culture of thankfulness, and it will start manifesting to your team. When you express gratitude, your employees will show their gratefulness to each other.<\/p>\n

Celebrate All Year<\/h3>\n

While National Employee Appreciation Day is a great time to honor employees, my goal is to make sure they feel appreciated throughout the year. For starters, new employees receive a hand-written letter and \u201cswag bag\u201d during onboarding to welcome them to the team. We also go beyond just one day of appreciation for our employees, dedicating an entire week each year to food, fun activities, and prizes centered on our gratitude for their hard work.<\/p>\n

Another initiative that shows you care is to allot a portion of company funds to giving back within the organization. Zander is proud to support employees who are raising money for their children\u2019s schools, activities, or projects they are passionate about. Additionally, our peer-nominated Employee of the Month program gives employees yet another outlet to recognize each other\u2019s successes and dedication.<\/p>\n

Investing in your employees throughout the year is the greatest way to show you value them, and to retain them. After all, employee loyalty reaps dividends when it comes to customer loyalty.<\/p>\n
